This infographic displays the alarming statistics related to backover accidents. In 2013, the Transportation Department said that it would add rearview cameras in vehicles to its list of recommended safety features to help prevent the 292 annual deaths — 44% of which are children — that occur as a result of backover accidents.
Though debate exists over whether rearview cameras should be optional versus standard features in vehicles, there is no question that the cameras can help reduce the amount of injuries and deaths caused by backover accidents.
As a Michigan license restoration lawyer, I know the severity of this issue — especially considering the fact that more than 70% of backover fatalities involve a parent or close relative as the driver.
